Reader 2: What are you doing?
Reader 1: Reading.
Reader 2: What are you reading?
Reader 1: A book.
Reader 2: I see that you are reading a book, thank you very much. Is it interesting?
Reader 1: Yes, it is.
Reader 2: Is it scary?
Reader 1: Sometimes.
Reader 2: Oh, is it funny?
Reader 1: Sometimes.
Reader 2: It sounds nice. Is it a novel or a detective story or…
Reader 1: It’s a fairy-tale.
Reader 2; What?!!! You read fairy-tales!!! How old are you?!!
Reader1: It’s a very serious fairy-tale. And interesting. And thrilling.
Reader2: What is it about?
Reader1: Oh…It’s about four children from our world. There names are Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy. (Characters appear on the stage as their names are called out) Once they found a way to the wonderful world of talking animals and strange creatures, called Narnia… But this world is ruled by the cruel White Witch.
Reader 2: White Witch?
Reader1: Yes, she put her spell on Narnia and it is always winter there.
Reader2: Only winter?!!
Reader1: Yes, only winter and no Christmas!
Reader2: How horrible!!!
Reader1: You are right. And there is only one creature that can help Narnia – Aslan, the Great Lion.
Reader2: Really?
Reader1: Aslan created that world and now he is coming to break the spell, but Edmund told the Witch everything he knew about Aslan and all that…
Reader2: What for?
Reader1: He is very naughty and he is a sweet tooth and the Queen gave him magic sweets…
Reader2: And?..
Reader1: But he didn’t know that she was very cruel and she wanted to kill him and his brother and sisters.
Reader2: What for???
Reader1: To be the only Queen of Narnia. There is a prediction that human children can cast her down… Aslan and others saved him…
Reader2: So, everything is all right!!!
Reader1: No, I don’t think so…yet…Let’s see…
Peter, Susan, Lucy and Beavers are on the stage. Aslan comes to them. Edmund follows him, his head bowed.
Aslan: Here is you brother. And there is no need to talk to him about what is past.
All children are shaking hands.
Edmund: I’m sorry.
Peter, Susan, Lucy: That’s all right…
Leopard (coming to Aslan); Sir, there is a messenger from the enemy who craves audience.
Aslan: Let him approach.
The leopard goes away and then returns, leading the dwarf.
Dwarf (with a bow): The Queen of Narnia and Empress of Lone Islands desires a safe conduct to come and speak with you on a matter which is as much to your advantage as to hers.
Beaver: Queen of Narnia, indeed! Of all the cheek…
Aslan: Peace, Beaver. All the names will soon be restored to their proper owners. Tell your mistress, Son of Earth, that I grant her safe conduct on condition that she leaves her wand behind her at that great oak.
The leopard goes back with dwarf.
Lucy (to Peter): But supposing she turns the leopard into stone?
Peter: It’ll be all right. He wouldn’t send him if it weren’t!
The Witch comes across and stands in front of Aslan. The children are afraid of her, animals growl. The Witch doesn’t look Aslan exactly in his eyes.
Witch: You have a traitor here, Aslan.
Edmund looks at Aslan.
Aslan: Well, his offence was not against you.
Witch: Have you forgotten the Deep Magic?!
Aslan: Let us say I have forgotten it? Tell us the Deep Magic.
Witch: Tell you? (Her voice growing shriller). Tell you what is written on that very Table of Stone which stands beside us? You at least know the Magic which the Emperor put into Narnia at the very beginning. You know that every traitor belongs to me as my lawful prey and that every treachery I have a right to kill.
Beaver: Oh, so that’s how you came to imagine yourself a queen – because you were the Emperor’s hangman. I see…
Aslan (with a growl): Peace, Beaver!
Witch: And so that human creature is mine. His life forfeit to me. His blood is my property.
Leopard: Come and take it then!
Witch (with a savage smile): Fool! Do you really think your master can robe me of my rights by mere force? He knows the Deep Magic better than that. He knows that unless I have blood as the Law says all Narnia will be overturned and perish in fire and water!!!
Aslant: It’s very true. I do not deny it.
Susan (to Aslan): Oh, Aslan! Can’t we – I mean, you won’t, will you? Can’t we do something about the Deep Magic? Isn’t there something you can work against it?
Aslan (with a frown on his face): Work against the Emperor’s Magic?
Silence. Everybody is looking at Aslan.
Aslan: Fall back, all of you! And I will talk to the Witch alone
Lion and Witch are talking in law voices.
Lucy: Oh, Edmund! (Begins to cry)
Peter is standing with his back to the others, looking at a distant sea.
The Beavers are standing, holding each other’s paws with their heads bowed.
The Leopard is walking up and down the stage.
Aslan: You can all come back. I have settled the matter. She has renounced the claim on your brother’s blood.
A loud breath of all the characters then congratulations and talk.
The Witch is just turning away with a look of fierce joy on her face when she stops: But how do I know this promise will be kept?
Aslan (half rising from his throne): Haa-a-arrh.
The Witch runs away.
Reader1: Let’s stop here.
Reader2: Why, it’s so interesting! I want to know everything till the end.
Reader1: Read the book.
Reader2: OK, will you lend me this book? And what is the title?
Reader1: With pleasure. And it’s called “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe”.
Reader2: Oh, I see!
Deep Magic from the Dawn of Time.
